Prainha Beach, Madeira: How to Visit Caniçal’s Small Black-Sand Cove
Whenever someone asks for a quiet, less-crowded beach, my go-to answer is Prainha Beach in Madeira. And they almost always come back singing its praises: it’s small, with black-sand and beautiful views of the east coast, and best of all, it’s usually very quiet despite its size.
Prainha do Caniçal is located between the fishing town of Caniçal and the São Lourenço peninsula. Tucked between cliffs, you can’t see it from the road, so many people drive straight past it on their way to the Ponta de São Lourenço (PR8) hike without having any idea it’s there.

In this guide, I’ll explain how to get there, why it’s so special, and my experience visiting while living on the east coast.

Where is Prainha do Caniçal?
Prainha do Caniçal is located just east of Caniçal, along the road to the São Lourenço peninsula, just before the Dreams Madeira Resort, Spa & Marina.
This makes it a short 10-minute drive from Machico and the airport. If you’re based nearby and you have a car, it’s an easy addition to your list of things to do in Machico.

I also like visiting Prainha as a stop-off after a hike on the east coast of Madeira. Some of my favourite hikes nearby include:
- Vereda da São Lourenço (PR8) or Levada do Caniçal
- Pico do Facho or Levada dos Maroços in Machico
- Vereda do Larano in Porto da Cruz
What Is Prainha Beach Like?
Prainha is a small, cove-style beach that feels tucked away despite being only a couple of minutes’ walk from the busy road to Ponta da São Lourenço. But because it sits below the cliffs, you can’t see or hear the road from the beach.
It’s not a particularly well-known tourist spot, so most of the people you meet there are local or have found it through word-of-mouth. That’s how I heard about it too, while living in Machico for several months in 2024.

Prainha goes by a few different names. I’ve heard it called Prainha, Prainha do Caniçal and sometimes just Caniçal Beach.
The black sand here is pretty typical of Madeira. The beach in Machico — far busier — only has white sand because it was imported in.
There’s also a black-sand beach called Seixal Beach on the north coast, which is larger and more scenic, but it gets far more crowded, especially in summer.
Can You Swim at Prainha?
Yes, you can swim at Prainha Beach in Madeira. When I visited, the water was relatively calm, although a little cold due to the time of year.
Sea temperatures tend to feel warmer from September to October, after they’ve warmed up over the summer months.
There are no lifeguards at Prainha, so you do need to be mindful of swimming safety. This is an open, natural beach without a harbour, so rip currents are possible.
Facilities at Prainha
Prainha do Caniçal has limited facilities, as it’s a small, natural beach without a dedicated lifeguard service.
The facilities at the beach are all seasonal: there’s a building with toilets (typically €1 per use) and changing rooms, as well as cold outdoor showers.

During the summer months, a small restaurant-bar opens, serving drinks (including poncha), coffee and proper meals.
How to Get to Prainha Beach
By Car
You can easily reach Prainha beach by car. There are single-file parking spaces along the main road above the beach; go to the Parque de Estacionamento location. From Funchal, the drive takes about 30 minutes.
Without a Car
You can reach Prainha by public transport. You’ll need SIGA bus 113 – timetable here – which departs from Funchal and passes through Machico and Caniçal.
Get off at Baía d’Abra. The journey takes approximately:
- 10 minutes from Caniçal
- 30 minutes from Machico
- 1 hour 20 minutes from Funchal
The alternative is to take a taxi. This is going to be quite expensive from Funchal, so I don’t really recommend it. Buses are a much cheaper way of getting around Madeira, especially if you’re exploring the island without a car.
Is Prainha Worth Visiting?
Prainha is small, sheltered and quite different from any other beach I’ve visited in Madeira. I really like it, because it feels totally tucked away and less busy than places like Seixal beach.
It’s also easy to reach from Funchal or Machico, even without a car. The downside is that in winter, it doesn’t have very many facilities. It’s also a small beach, so on the off chance you visit when it’s uncharacteristically busy, you may find it a bit too crowded.
Prainha vS Other Beaches in Madeira
- Prainha vs Seixal Beach: Seixal is larger and more scenic than Prainha, but far busiser. Prainha feels smaller, quieter and more low-key.
- Prainha vs Machico Beach: Machico has white sand and calmer swimming waters thanks to its harbour wall. It’s easier to reach and better equipped, but busier.
- Prainha vs Ribeira de Natal: Ribeira de Natal beach is another quiet swimming spot in Caniçal, but it’s a pebble beach with a pier. Prainha is more comfortable if you want to lie on the sand.
Tips for Visiting
- Bring plenty of water. The sun can be strong, even if there’s a breeze.
- Bring a few coins for the toilets (€1 per use).
- Wear comfy shoes, as you need to walk down concrete steps to reach the beach.
- Facilities (toilets and restaurant) may be closed outside peak season.
- Always check the sea conditions before entering the water; the beach isn’t lifeguarded.
